If you've just installed new hardware, the Blue Screen will probably be caused by an incorrect driver. Boot Windows into Safe Mode (by hitting F8 just before the Windows logo shows). In Safe Mode, you can go to Control Panel > System > Hardware Manager to roll back the driver or to uninstall the device. Other causes are faulty RAM and bad capacitators (caps) on the motherboard. Though rare, I've also seen BSOD from a compuer trying to boot from a corrupt CD. Most of the times Blue Screen of Death is due to file corruption. Boot from the Windows install CD and go into the Recovery Console. From the command line run chkdsk /r to fix file errors. Once chkdsk is done, exit the Recovery Console and try to restart. Even if XP seems to start now without any problem, you need to run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program to check for hardware errors. If Windows is running but the device tests out bad, you still need to get a new hard drive. Chkdsk has only put a bandaid on the original problem and the Blue Screen of Death stop error will return. If after running chkdsk Windows still crashes with a Blue Screen, but the diagnostic program reports the drive as good, then the device can be used again. In this case, you'll first need to recover the data. After that, run the Windows install program, remove the partition and format the drive. DO NOT use the "quick" format option!
