This DECstation belongs to the last generation of Mips-based workstations made by DEC, just before the switch to the Alpha processor was made. In fact, both the case and the internal peripherals are extremely similar to the DEC3000/300 line of Turbochannel based Alpha workstations. Common attributes are for example the Audio hardware and ISDN interface, both implemented via an AMD AM79C30 controller chip. DEC however never attempted to certify the interface for use in Germany, so the RJ plug is covered with a "don't use" sticker :-(

Similar to the 5000/1xx and 5000/240, the processor itself is located on a separate CPU module. Other options were:

  • R3000/3010 @ 20MHz
  • R3000/3010 @ 25MHz
  • R4000 @ 50MHz
